It’s the first wine from 2009, grapes hanging on the vine just a few weeks before it’s bottled. Think of it as a celebration of the new harvest. We are talking Nouveau Beaujolais, of course…and we have different bottlings this year including offerings from two old favorites and top producers, George Dubouef and Joseph Drouhin. Having just tasted through them, I can honestly say they are among the best Nouveaus made in recent memory. Here’s the line-up:

Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau, $9.99

From the acknowledge King of Beaujolais, this year’s version has been reported to be a bit richer and more concentrated than in years past. Less of the bubble gum and banana aromas and flavors, and more of the ripe berry and cherry fruit, with a surprising backbone of food-friendly acidity. Best of all, they brought the price down.

Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau, $13.99

This Burgundy house always offers a distinctively delicious take on the style. Usually it’s a little less Nouveau light, and a little more on the “real” wine side. Always has an appreciative following, and always makes a good match for your holiday meal.

Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais Nouveau, $18.99

From a family Domaine that has been making wine since 1512, this one is new to us. Created from a selection of 21 different cuvees, its femented with natural yeasts, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. If you’re getting the idea that this is a different sort of a Nouveau, you’re right. Come in and taste that difference.
